Snail massacres

The best antidote for a nasty week at work has got to be physical labour, so I ended up moving bricks in the garden of my parent's house. I'm sure I read in some novel or other about soldiers being trained by getting them to move a massive pile of rocks across the parade ground, but visualising that didn't really help. Anyway, during the heavy lifting in the sun, I unearthed hundreds of snails that had been peacefully living and dying over many generations in the shade of the bricks. A whole, self-contained community suddenly ripped apart. The horror.....
