We popped into the Manchester Climbing Centre today (after a brief stop off at work so I could freeze some mutant bacteria). I tried to warm up on a 5+ but couldn't get anywhere on it at all- horrible slopey precarious holds. "Hmm" I thought and sidestepped onto a different route, supposedly the same difficulty. Still no joy, and I had to give up.

At this point I was a bit concerned that my excesses of wine and port the night before might have caused me to completely forget how to climb. Chris had a go and while she got to the top, it was only just without falling off.

The next bit we tried reassured me that the MCC had not in fact decided to comically undergrade everything and was pretty reasonable. This spurred me into leading a highly implausible 6b in the corner - not much strength required, but all about wedging yourself into the corner and balancing up on hardly any holds. First time I've ever managed that grade in one go so pretty happy..

We finished off the visit with the bouldering wall (short walls over big crash mats so no ropes or harnesses needed). There had been some sort of kids party so the whole area was full of tiny kids (no more than 5) running round on the mat. The deeply stupid parents seemed to be unconcerned that they kept running underneath the grown up people who were about to fall off 10 ft above their heads and crush them to death....

Tomorrow is the Manchester German Market where I intend to consume the world's biggest Bratwurst :)
