Fun with science, oh yes!
Here I am, sat next to a big container of liquid helium which is cooling a protein sample down to 4 degrees above absolute zero for me. It's just taking a *really long time* to do this.
The manual has interesting diagrams of things exploding if done wrong. The rig keeps making creaking noises just to worry me....
The poor bacteria have a terrible time of it really - first I put a few of them in a nice, warm, loving environment and encourage them to breed - a lot. Just when they think everything is lovely and like a nice holiday, they get spun round in a centrifuge, frozen, defrosted, then squashed until their insides pop out. Maybe I should wear a black cap while I'm doing this.....
