Hope is a virtue..
Aug. 29th, 2010 09:03 pmWe almost called off today's planned walk, as moderate rain at home turned torrential on entering the peak district. Luckily we stuck around at Hope village for coffee and things had eased off enough to get going on the walk. Up to Lose Hill to be met by a proper windblast. As we followed the ridge along it was too windy to hear, and we had to walk at an angle into the wind to make progress. Mam Tor summit saw a peak to the wind speed and as soon as we dropped into the lee side, it calmed down a lot.
We followed the old Chapel en le Frith to Sheffield A-road, which closed in 1979 after they gave up repairing it after landslides. Now its like something out of Mad Max, with sudden drops of several feet in the surface where the tarmac is broken and places where a whole lane has collapsed. Back in Castleton for tea and cake before wandering along the riverbank to Hope and the car. Lovely!
