More observations
Aug. 20th, 2009 03:21 pm1. Security.
There are metal detectors in all the hotels and public buildings. They go off whenever anyone walks through, but noone cares. In contrast, there are loads of casual looking policemen carrying some old and dodgy sub machine guns. One had his SMG and two pistols in hip holsters. He was mainly giving directions to tourists in the main square!
2. Overly suspicious.
We went to Karakoy which is a waterfront district, last night. I was a bit overly suspicious, mainly as a result of all the waiters from adjacent, competing resturants trying to physically drag us into their establishments. I ned an umbrella or rolled up newspaper. When we ordered beers for 5TL, depicted as a small bottle and then a half litre turned up, I naturally checked we weren't being charged more. Nope - it costs 5 for a bottle or 5 for a pint. I then refused the offered fruit thinking it was being added onto our order before discovering it was free.
